The Creation

How the Earth Was Created by God

The Beginning

In the beginning, God created heaven and earth. The earth was left as a formless mass, empty and dark - destroyed. But the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

The First Day: Light

Then God said, "Let there be light!" And suddenly, there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. He called light "Day" and darkness "Night". And so, evening and morning marked the first day.

The Second Day: Heaven

On the second day, God said, "Let there be a space in the midst of the waters, to separate the waters above from the waters below." God made a space and separated the waters that were below that space from those that were above. God called this space "Heaven". And again, evening and morning marked the second day.

The Third Day: Dry Land

On the third day, God said, "Let the waters gather together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And so it happened! God called the dry land "Earth" and the place where the waters came together "Seas". God saw that it was good! Then God said, "May the earth produce green grass, plants that bear seed, and fruit trees that bear fruit according to their kind, and may these trees have seed in them." And so it was! The earth brought forth grass, seed-bearing plants, and fruit-bearing trees, each according to its kind. God saw that everything was good! And again, evening and morning marked the third day.

The Fourth Day: Sun, Moon, Stars

God said, "Let us set lights in the sky to separate the day from the night, and also to mark the seasons, the days, and the years." And so God did. He created the sun to shine during the day, the moon to shine during the night, and all the stars in the sky. God placed these lights in the sky to give light on the earth and to help us know when it is day and when it is night. He also wanted the lights to remind us of the seasons. God saw that everything was good. Evening and morning were the fourth day.

The Fifth Day: Fish and Birds

God said: "May the waters of the seas and rivers be full of fish and may birds fly across the sky." So God created many kinds of fish and put them in the water. He also created birds of all colors and sizes and let them fly through the skies. God saw that everything was good. He blessed the fish and birds, saying: "Be many and multiply!" And so evening and morning were the fifth day.

The Sixth Day: Earth Animals and Humans

God said, "May the earth produce many kinds of animals, such as domestic animals, animals that crawl on the ground, and wild animals." And so it happened. God created animals of all sizes and shapes, each according to its kind. He made the animals that live with us at home, like cats and dogs. He also made the animals that live in the forest, like lions and bears. God saw that everything was good.

And then God said, "Let us make human beings in our image, like us. They will be special and have authority over the fish in the sea, over the birds in the sky and over all the animals on the earth." God created human beings, one man and one woman. He blessed them and said, "Be many and have many children! People the earth and take care of it. Take responsibility for animals and plants." God saw everything he had made, and it was very good! Evening and morning were the sixth day.

The Seventh Day: God Enjoys

After finishing creating the heavens, the earth and everything in it, God decided to enjoy. He was happy with everything he had done and decided to take a day to enjoy it. God blessed that special day, the seventh day, and made it very special. He wanted people to have a day to enjoy too, to appreciate nature and be close to their families. This day is called the day of enjoyment and it is a special day to thank God for all that he has created.
