David and Goliath
Once upon a time, many years ago, a people called Israel lived in a land called Judah. The Philistines, who were their neighbors, wanted to fight them and so a great battle began.
The soldiers of Israel were encamped on one side of the valley and the Philistines on the other. Then, suddenly, a very big and strong man named Goliath came out of the camp of the Philistines. He was so tall he was almost ten feet!!
Goliath wore very heavy armor and carried a huge spear that looked like a tree. He challenged the soldiers of Israel to choose one man to fight him in battle.
But none of Israel's soldiers wanted to fight Goliath. They were very afraid of him.
Then a young man named David appeared. He was not a soldier, but a shepherd who took care of sheep. He had come to bring food to his brothers who were fighting in battle.
David was outraged to hear Goliath challenging God's people. He volunteered to fight Goliath, even though he was much smaller and weaker than he was.
David took five pebbles and his slingshot and prepared for the fight. When Goliath approached, David hit a rock on his forehead and he fell to the ground. So David used Goliath's sword to smite him.
The Philistines were very afraid when they saw that David had defeated Goliath. And the soldiers of Israel were very happy and thanked David for having saved God's people.
And so, David became a hero to the people of Israel and his courage and faith in God are remembered to this day.
